Description

Ambulance transport delays have been identified as a major discharge barrier for Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center. These external delays impact bedflow efficiency and leading to bottlenecks for the Emergency department and surgical admissions. Including patients with nursing care needs into a departure lounge model will open inpatient beds earlier in the day and improve patient throughput. The introduction of ambulance discharges at Luminis Health resulted in significant improvements in throughput metrics such as ED boarding, OR hold time, admission turnaround time, and ED left without being seen.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe how real-time capacity monitoring systems inform transfer decision-making and system-wide situational awareness.
  • Differentiate between transfer redirection strategies for emergent vs. urgent patients and identify when each approach is operationally appropriate.
  • Explain the key components of an effective load balancing process, including triggers, governance, and escalation pathways, to optimize patient flow across a hospital network.
